Character History: Zelgadis was mostly raised by his great-grandfather, Rezo, the Red Priest, a powerful magic user, cursed by blindness. Zel has little recollection of his parents, or even his exact blood relationship to Rezo.

Zelgadis aspired to become stronger and trained in swordsmanship and magic. When he was a teenager, Rezo made him an offer to make him stronger. Zelgadis didn't read the fine print, and Rezo changed him into a chimera. Zel wasn't terribly happy about this. He continued to assist Rezo in the whole blindness-cure thing, but was eager to find something that would let him kick Rezo to the curb.

Zel's big break came when Rezo had him track down the Philosopher's Stone, a legendary artifact capable of amplifying magic. Zel switches sides to convince the person who had it, Lina Inverse and Gourry Gabriev, to help him out. Rezo tracks them down, forces Lina to give up the stone, and tries to use it to cure his blindness. Turns out Rezo was blind due to the seal from a piece of Dark Lord Shabranigdo, who had been angling to get Rezo to undo it, so he could destroy the world. Lina, Gourry and Zel take the Dark Lord down, but Rezo's death meant that Zelgadis had to turn to other means to find a way to reverse his chimerism.

To make a long story short, with the exception of an irate former subordinate of Rezo putting a bounty on his head, Zelgadis's adventures can be summed up as 'looking for a cure' and 'getting roped into helping to save the world'. Often at the same time.
